New Delhi: Call it the negligence of the governments or the negligence of the administration… Delhi has once again been listed as the most polluted capital globally. The average annual level of PM 2.5 here has been recorded at 102.1 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023, making it the most polluted capital in the world. In 2022 this figure was 92.6 micrograms per cubic meter. This means that Delhi's pollution has increased by 10 percent during this period. At the same time, India has been the third most polluted country globally in 2023, with neighboring Bangladesh at first and Pakistan at second. According to the Region and City PM 2.5 ranking, Delhi has been ranked as the world's most polluted capital for the fourth consecutive time since 2018. It was at number three in 2022, but this year it again came to number one. The World Air Quality Report 2023 also estimates that 1.36 billion people in India are exposed to high concentrations of PM 2.5, more than the WHO recommended annual level of five micrograms per cubic metre. According to the report, India will have 83 out of the 100 polluted cities in the world in 2023. Begusarai was the most polluted city in the world last year. In the IQ air ranking, Begusarai is followed by Guwahati, Delhi and Mullanpur (Pakistan). The 2022 report included data from 7,323 locations in 131 countries. In 2023, this number increased to 7,812 locations in 134 countries. Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to human health. According to WHO, it is responsible for an estimated 7 million premature deaths worldwide every year. According to experts, exposure to PM 2.5 air pollution causes and worsens many health problems. These include, but are not limited to, asthma, cancer, stroke, and lung disease.
