What is Lightning Protection System?

A lightning protection system (LPS) helps protect buildings and equipment from lightning strikes. It’s a set of tools and methods aimed at lessening the damage caused by lightning. The main purpose is to guide the lightning’s electricity safely away from structures and sensitive gear.

The system comprises various devices and parts meant to shield buildings from lightning. By creating a safe, low-resistance pathway, it redirects the lightning’s electrical charge, minimizing harm. Studies show that well-designed systems can be highly effective, offering protection from 84% to 99% of lightning strikes.

Typically, an LPS includes conductors, rods, and grounding/earthing systems installed on the building’s roof and sides. These components attract lightning strikes and steer the electrical current away from the structure. The grounding system then safely channels the current into the ground.
